Four generations

Broxted Hill Farm is a 4th generation family business in North Essex. Joe, Olivia and their family manage and farm 450 acres, grow combinable crops and raise rare breed sheep and pigs.

To run and work the same land that Joe’s great grandparents, grandparents, uncle and father all worked means a great deal to us.

Farming methods have drastically changed over the years and we are acutley aware of this industry must grow and evolve, particularly as a small family concern. We do however, love the continuty of keeping pigs and sheep as the Smith’s first did so here in Broxted back in the 1920’s.

What we believe

Simply put, our drive is to grow crops and farm whilst maintaining and improving the natural beauty of the landscape and enriching the wildlife that falls within it.

How we achieve this…

  • Natural habitats

Creating quality ecosystems that attract deer, hare, foxes and badgers to our woodlands and streams. Planting pollen rich swards to attract insects and feed birds.

  • Trees

We manage our woodland and have started a small native apple orchard. We work with JS Wright and Sons planting English cricket bat willow trees along our streams for natural riverbank restoration, soil stabilisation, and carbon sequestration.

  • Soil

Using our animals for grazing offers a natural source of organic matter and encourages new growth. We have legume rich grass leys which fixes nitrogen into the soil.
